  • Blocked by robots.txt: Pages restricted from search engine crawling.
  • Pages with redirects: URLs pointing to another page.

If you want to create a custom file, you can use free tools like the Robots.txt Generator by SEOptimer.

Once it’s ready, make sure your file is live at:

And always test it using Google’s robots.txt Tester to ensure it works properly.

XML sitemap

An XML sitemap helps search engines discover and index your important pages more efficiently. 

After creating a sitemap, it is essential to publish it on your site so search engines can find and use it. Here’s what you need to do:

Steps: How to publish a sitemap

WordPress → If you use Yoast or Rank Math, your sitemap is auto-generated at: yourwebsite.com/sitemap_index.xml.

Webflow → Go to Project Settings → SEO and turn on “Generate Sitemap.”

Shopify → Your sitemap is ready by default at: yourstore.com/sitemap.xml.

💡 Most modern platforms handle this for you. Just double-check your robots.txt to make sure the sitemap link is listed.

Fix broken links

It’s sad when you visit a website and it shows a broken link with a frustrating 404 error page. It leaves you feeling stuck, right? Similarly, your visitors, and search engines don’t like broken links either.

It will hurt your website in two ways:

  1. Bad user experience: Visitors get frustrated and may leave your site.
  2. Negative SEO impact: Search engines see your site as poorly maintained and lowers your rankings.

How to fix broken links?

Remember the technical SEO audit you’ve done in first step? 

They’re not done working for you yet! 

It has a list of 404 error URLs which you need to resolve. 

Okay, how?

Redirect the link
Redirecting the old links is one of the best technical SEO practices.

If the content has moved permanently, use a 301 redirect to send users to the correct page. And if the move is temporary, use a 302 redirect (though 301 is preferred for SEO).

Update or replace links

If the broken link points to deleted, or outdated content, either replace it with a relevant link or remove it.

Pro tips:

  • Perform regular checks I mean schedule monthly or quarterly scans to keep your website free of broken links. 
  • Don’t forget to customize your 404 error page! Add a friendly message, navigation links, or a search bar so visitors don’t leave your site immediately.

Structured data implementation

Ever noticed Google showing extra details in search results, like FAQs, star ratings, or step-by-step guides?

  1. Generate the code

You can use tools like Google’s Markup Helper.

Or (my favorite no-code method 😎), just ask ChatGPT to generate schema markup. For example, I gave my FAQ questions and answers, and ChatGPT instantly created the FAQ schema markup code.

Once generated, then I test the code with Schema markup validator to ensure it’s error free.

  1. Add the code to your site

WordPress → Add it via your SEO plugin (Yoast, Rank Math, etc.).

Webflow → Copy-paste it into the <head> or body section of your page settings.

  • Go to Google Search Console → URL Inspection Tool.
  • Enter the updated page URL.
  • Click Request Indexing.

Canonicalization

Let’s say you have an e-commerce website selling shoes, and you have two pages with similar content:

  1. www.example.com/red-sneakers
  2. www.example.com/red-sneakers-2024

Both pages are truly identical from any perspective.  Be it product descriptions, images, and specifications, and the only difference being is URL. 

🚨 Without canonicalization, search engines treat these as duplicate pages and may split the traffic and ranking power between them.

To avoid this, you need to add a canonical tag that points to the main version. 

For example:

This tells search engines:

👉 “Hey, the main page is red-sneakers. Rank this one.”

How to add canonical tags

WordPress → If you’re using SEO plugins like Yoast SEO or Rank Math, canonical tags are handled automatically. You can also edit them manually inside the page/post SEO settings.

Webflow → Open your page → Settings → SEO settings → Add your preferred canonical URL in the “Canonical Tag” field.

Pro tip: Canonicalization is a lifesaver if you ever publish the same content more than once. It protects your SEO by making sure only the main version counts.

Securing your website

Switch to HTTPS if you haven’t yet.

Let’s understand it with a simple example.

With HTTPS, all the data is encrypted, keeping your private information safe and secure during the transaction.

Simple! Just follow the below steps.

Step 1: Go to a trusted SSL provider like GoDaddy, or Comodo.

Step 2: Purchase a SSL certificate for your domain.

Step 3: Install the SSL certificate to your website control panel (known as cPanel).

Step 4: Ensure all internal links, scripts, and images point to https:// instead of http://.

Step 5: After setting it up, update the GSC with your new site version and test your website with tools like SSL Labs.

“Slow and steady wins the race”, this might be true for humans but is absolutely false for websites.

If two different pages have very similar content, rewrite the content to make each page unique and valuable to users. This improves the user experience and helps search engines rank the most relevant page higher.

Steps to use:

Set up

Verify your website by uploading the HTML file provided by Google or using DNS verification.

Submit a sitemap

Go to the “Sitemaps” section and upload your XML sitemap. This helps Google crawl your website effectively.

Check indexing issues

Navigate to the “Pages” section to identify errors like 

  • Pages with redirect
  • Pages excluded by ‘noindex’ tag
  • Pages blocked by robots.txt
  • Pages crawled – but currently not indexed
  • Pages not found (404)

Fix these issues and resubmit the pages for indexing.

Analyze keywords and CTR
